Please join me at my brand new website!

Please join me at the brand new www.MallorieOwens.com ≫≫
After lots of thought, I realized my brand was a bit all over the place. I had a personal website, a photography website, and a shop that included things that no longer represented my style.
I hope this move to combine everything that I do in one lovely space will make things a lot easier for everyone. Myself included!

Morning Super Smoothie Recipe.

Morning Super Smoothie Recipe | Home is with You

Like I said in this post, I've been really trying to make more smoothies and have them become part of my routine. And as much as I love coffee, and I do loooove coffee, I've been trying to find a smoothie I could make in the mornings that would give me an energy boost, but still tasted delicious.

I think I found the perfect balance of tasty ingredients that are also packed full of nutrients when I made this smoothie, so of course I wanted to share! This smoothie recipe has lots of superfoods in one drink. It always surprises me how many fruits and vegetables can fit into one glass once you put them in the food processor, anyone else?

Morning Super Smoothie Recipe | Home is with You

Ingredients ≫≫
Banana
3 splashes of Almond Milk (about 2 Tbsp)
1/2 a large carrot
A few small handfuls of blueberries (about 15 berries)
3 leaves of kale
1 Tbsp chia seeds
2 dates, pitted and chopped

Add a few ingredients at a time and pulse them in your food processor, then push the mixture down and add a few more ingredients until every thing is in the food processor. Pulse until it's the desired texture. I like my smoothies to not be completely runny, but I don't want any chunks in there either.

Cheers!

Iron Tree Candle.

Iron Tree Candle | Home is with You

I've been burning the "cranberry fig" candle Iron Tree Candle sent me since November, almost daily, and it's still going strong. It has such a homey smell that doesn't completely take over our little place, but gives it a lovely overall scent. I love that these handmade soy candles are in adorable mason jars and fit right in with the rest of my decor.

I'm definitely going to use her tips to reuse the jar and add it to my mason jar drinking glass collection once I finish off the candle. But for now, I'm enjoying lighting the candle every day as I sit at my desk and write.

I want to know, what's your favorite candle scent?

Happy Birthday, Dave!

Today is Dave's Birthday, so if you could all help me wish him a very happy day, I'd really appreciate it! You can tweet him here. Thanks friends!

And if I can't get sappy on his Birthday, then when can I? So, I'd just like to say...

Happy Birthday, Dave!

I'm thankful every day to have you in my life, and I love celebrating the day you were born. It's easily one of my favorite days of the year, getting to spoil you all day long.

This year I'm SO excited about Dave's gift, I love surprises (giving and receiving), but it always ends up being really tough to surprise Dave. He has no idea about his gift this year and I could just burst! I feel so blessed to have this man in my life and can't wait to celebrate with him today.

Sunset on the harbor.

Last week we experienced one of those sunsets that you just have to run out of the house, go for a drive, and take it all in. Anyone else do that? There was a thin layer of fog in the distance over the ocean in Juneau that night, it made it all that much prettier...don't you think?

Oh and Happy Friday! What's everyone have going on this weekend? It's Dave's Birthday on Sunday, so the birthday celebrations that started yesterday for me (can you believe how close our bdays are?) will continue this weekend. Gotta love it!

Alaskan Wildlife ≫≫ Sea Lions and Whales.

Alaskan Wildlife ≫≫ Sea Lions and Whales | Home is with You

Last week I promised some of the pictures I took of the whales and sea lions I saw. Now, I don't have a telephoto lens (one that can take great pictures from far away), but I did manage to get a few shots of the whales and sea lions here in Juneau that I wanted to share. They were coming so close to the shore! So here's what happened...

It was a gorgeous day, and for awhile those were few and far between, so Dave brought some sushi home for lunch and then asked if I wanted to drive him back to work so I could have the car the rest of the day and explore a bit. I was feeling a bit too lazy to walk around (working on this), and thought I'd just go home and finish my work for the day, but Dave pretty much wouldn't take no for an answer (love that man) and told me to take the car.

So, I dropped him off and headed out, I was about to head South (back towards home), but something was pulling me to head North instead. The further North I drove, the foggier it was and I decided I needed to turn around. Once I finally got to a turnaround spot (there aren't many up that way), I saw the view in the picture above and had to grab a shot with my phone. Of course.

I got out of the car to grab a quick picture and started hearing these crazy animal noises (which I later found out were sea lions). I couldn't see anything passed the trees, because it was so foggy, and I was a little freaked out. I mean, this is Alaska, you never know what's going to pop out of those bushes! So I'm frantically looking around, making sure some crazy creature isn't about to jump out at me...

And then, through the fog, I see a whale tale...slowly come up and back down...so graceful and peaceful. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced. The combination of the silence, the fog, and the calmness of this animal that you know is humongous...it was magical.

Once I was out of shock, my first reaction was to grab my Canon as fast as possible. I waited and waited, but of course it never happened again. I finally decided I had time to run down to the Shrine to get a bit closer. One of the men that takes care of the grounds out there told me he's lived here for a long time and it's very rare for the whales and sea lions to come so close to shore in the winter, but the herrings were out and so they were biting. I feel so blessed that we're here and able to experience it.

I sat there for an hour watching the sea lions and every once in awhile a whale. The sea lions were SO loud, it cracked me up. That weekend, Dave and I went back and the whales were much more active and both they and the sea lions were even closer to shore! So cool. We took our binoculars and climbed as close as we could, it still blows my mind that we live ten minutes away from an ocean full of these gorgeous animals. The Kansas girl in me is so impressed.

Dave Owens ↠ The Americana Show on KRNN

Dave Owens ↠ The Americana Show on KRNN

If you haven't seen on twitter or facebook, Dave now has his very own radio show on KRNN public radio! He went in to talk to them about being interviewed as a musician and they offered him a show of his own within ten minutes, how awesome is that? His first show was so much fun, if I do say so myself.

The show airs from 9-11pm Alaska time (12-2am Central) on Tuesday nights. I know this is a bit late for most of you, but if you're up we'd love to have you listen along! You can stream the show here.

Dave's really excited about the show, and I'm excited for him! We're still working on the name of the show, since it was a last minute project. Your ideas are welcome!

Wear ≫≫ Storenvy Accessories.

As a Storenvy shop owner myself, one of my favorite things is finding the hidden gems on Storenvy. There are so many fabulous shops that are trying to get their names out there, and I love having a small part in helping them do just that. Today I'm excited to show off an outfit I wore featuring two of my favorite Storenvy brands.

I wore a headband by Fairy Tale Accessories last week and talked about their campaign to make headbands for children with cancer (so sweet right?), and today I'm showing off a gorgeous clutch they sent me. I've been using this pretty little thing all the time and I get so many compliments every time I do! It also has a gold chain that you can use to wear it as a crossbody, which I love.

Elisha Marie is one of the most incredible handmade jewelry shops I've ever seen online, no lie. As soon as I came across her shop, I was drooling over all of the gorgeous items and so impressed that she makes them all herself. It didn't stop there, when she sent me a few items, her packaging was so beautiful and looked like it came straight from a fancy boutique.

I could go on and on, but I'll let the accessories talk for themselves...

Places to Eat in Anchorage, Alaska ↠ Snow City Cafe.

Places to Eat in Anchorage, Alaska ↠ Snow City Cafe. | Home is with You

Snow City Cafe, in Anchorage, is one of those restaurants that is always packed. If you plan to eat here during your trip to Alaska, make reservations, it's the only way to go...if you want to still be sane by the time you finish eating. You can do so on their website, here.

It's a cute little cafe in downtown Anchorage, and it was just a short walk up from where Dave and I lived while we were there. Every time we passed by, we wanted to try it, but they were always so busy that we kept saying "soon". It ended up being one of the last places we tried while we were in Anchorage, and I'm glad I finally made the reservations, it was definitely our kinda place.

The brunch menu had all kinds of delicious and healthy options. I had the nuevo huevos, which were something different (love that) and I really enjoyed the meal. I kept telling Dave he needed to figure out how to make it at home...hint, hint.

Beautiful day in the neighborhood ≫≫ documenting a rare sunny day in Juneau, Alaska.

I've mentioned it before, but it tends to rain a lot in Southeast Alaska. So when the sun does come out, I make it a priority to get outside and enjoy every little bit. A week or two ago, we had a particularly gorgeous day, so I headed out with my camera and captured as much of it as I could.

These pictures are from all over Juneau, which is gorgeous all the time, but looks like a completely different town when the sun decides to grace us with it's presence. It's funny, too, because I'm not the only one...the town is always extra busy, and every seems to have a certain spring in their step when the sun is shining. I love it.

In a few of the pictures, you can see something in the water peeking out, those are sea lions! I'm going to share a few more pictures I got of the sea lions and whales this week or next...but I had to go ahead and throw some in there. Since I'm originally from Kansas, I got pretty excited seeing sea lions and whales right down the street from our house.

I know we've only done the kinda touristy things Juneau has to offer, and not even all of those yet...I can't wait to explore more of this amazing little city we're living in. It truly is beautiful.
